Hotblooded!

HotBlood! is here, queer, and about centaurs in the old west.

HotBlood! is, in it's own words "a comic about centaurs in the old west." It starts here, in Wyoming, 1873.  Our two central protagonists are on the run from something, though we're not exactly sure on the details.  And before our questions can be fully answered, we're spirited away by the narrative back two years prior, to the meeting of the two characters.  One, Asa Langley, is a prominent steel magnate looking for an assistant.  The assistant turns out to be our narrator, James Rook, who just so happens to be a centaur.  As it turns out, in the world of HotBlood! centaurs are actually pretty commonplace.  Mr. Langley just didn't expect one to be his assistant.

If that's not enough awesome for you, the story also has a budding queer romance between Rook and Langley, though so far we've mostly just seen a bit of blushing and awkward staring.  Fear not, shippers, in an interview with The Daily Dot, writer and artist Toril Orlesky said about the relationship,

"I’m sick and tired of seeing the term “bromance” slapped onto a relationship between two men—usually the two lead characters of a show—as a “no homo” disclaimer. It’s a simple way to erase the possibility of a queer relationship while also implying that the word “friendship” would be too tender and wimpy for these particular leading men. Asa and Rook do some fairly despicable things over the course of the story, but investing in a relationship with each other is not one of them, and I don’t want to understate that."

Also, the art is gorgeous.  For example, page 2, which sets a beautiful western scene.

HotBlood returns from hiatus on Tuesday, March 4th.
