You never forget your first… Con.
The colors, the costumes, the crowds, the overwhelming feeling of “I just stepped into a room with 10,000 people who are all obsessed with their own corner of (un)Pop Culture and… it’s… AWESOME!” To be honest, I feel that way every year. But fandoms don’t come cheap, I know. And the events, known for their “Come one, come all” attitude, have also struggled to break away from the pale-boys-in-the-basement stereotype.
So in the spirit of inclusion we have Con or Bust, a non-profit dedicated to sending nerds of color (NOC is my preferred term, thanks) to their Con of choice. Want to support the cause? Submit an item for auction or place a bid on something precious between Feb. 10th-23rd. Current hot items include an Edward James Olmos autographed hand fan (Frak, yeah!) and a short story critique by a published SF/F author (generous, creative geeks abound!).
Need help attending your Con? Last year Con or Bust raised over $10,000, sending 15 people to events all over the US and abroad and they hope to top that this year. Request assistance and make your diversity dreams come true!
