2017 was a pretty giant clusterfuck, but throughout it, there were some silver linings for queer geeks. It doesn't look like there's going to be too much relief from the awfulness in 2018, but we can certainly hope for things to suck a little less, and that these movies and games will help us get through it all. Because there are some pretty cool things scheduled for release in 2018 which will hopefully (slightly) make up for all of the bullshit we're going to have to endure. In no particular order, here are nine things that will shine a beacon of light into the darkness.
1. Black Panther
The Marvel movie universe has been lagging on showcasing diverse heroes, so this movie is desperately needed. It looks amazing. Plus: "The revolution will not be televised… The revolution will be live."
2. Love, Simon
An amazing queer YA book (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli) is now a YA movie that’s going to be released to the masses. That’s pretty awesome folks.
3. A Wrinkle in Time
This book series got me into science fiction as a kid, and I cannot wait to see in movie form. With Ava DuVernay directing, this adaptation is definitely going to shine. And Oprah's in it, so you know it's going to be some kind of fucking masterpiece.
4. Avengers: Infinity Wars
The trailer dropped in November, and people already cannot get enough of Thanos bear-handing Iron Man and Steve Rogers's beard. Combine that with Wakanda probably saving the entire planet, and the month of May cannot come soon enough.
5. Ocean's Eight
The cast of this all-female heist movie is made up of Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and a bunch of other amazing ladies (and in the case of Ocean's Eight, a bunch means five). I need this in my life now.
6. Pacific Rim: Uprising
John Boyega is canceling the apocalypse, Mako is still in the movie, and there are Jaegers with super awesome high tech weapons. I'm already planning to see this movie 63 times.
7. Star Trek Discovery
The second half of the first season is coming back in 2018, and I can't wait to see more gays in space. Really, the only thing lacking from this show is more gays in space. They all just should be gay.
8. Far Cry 5
It's a first-person shooter game where you get to kill a bunch of right-wing cultists. I really don't need to say anything else.
9. The Last of Us:Part II
OK, so we don't know if this is actually going to come out in 2018, but we'll probably get at least some more information about the game. I need more Queer!Ellie in my life, and you do too. Naughty Dog, help us out on this one, please!
