In case you're unaware of our National Nightmare, the Senate recently voted on Trump's nomination of Jefferson Beauregard "Jeff" Sessions III for Attorney General. Coretta Scott King had written a letter in 19-fucking-86 where she insinuated that he was a racist and unfit for federal judgeship.
And, Elizabeth Warren tried to read this letter on the Senate floor, in 20-fucking17, and was silenced by Republican majority leader Mitch McConnell. He said she'd run afoul of a really obscure rule that says senators cannot demean one another on the Senate floor.
McConnell said, after silencing Warren, "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted." And it instantly became a rallying cry (the exact opposite of what the majority leader wanted) and meme. Kamala Harris made it a meme by placing the quote in text overtop a photo of Warren and many other real-life feminist icons. Hillary Clinton even tweeted her support of Warren.
And in the end, and because it's 2017 and everything is terrible, Sessions won the nomination. But, we need to take every bit of inspiration we can these days and not let ourselves become too exhausted (even if it does seem like the bad news is never-ending). So, let this shitty quote by an awful old white dude become something empowering for those of us on the other side.
