So, yeah, the headline pretty much explains it all. In recent days, it's come to our attention that the Regal Movie Theaters chain is at least indirectly owned by Philip Anschutz, a man who's contributed big bucks to several conservative organizations. Anschutz has even gone so far as to support anti-LGBT groups in his home state of Colorado.
Since our inception, Geeks OUT has frequently hosted events at the Regal Cinema at Union Square here in New York City. We've never experienced any trouble with the facility and figure that as a group, we've spent several thousand dollars on tickets and concessions. Overall, everyone enjoyed themselves. Well, except for the time we sat through last year's Green Lantern, but that's a different story...
Anyways, the point is that in spite of our experience, we can no longer in good conscience support a corporation with ties to an individual that does not support our own views. In the coming weeks, we'll be looking for venues that are pro-queer and progressive and reflect our own principles of equality and justice. If you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear from you. We're also putting together a letter to the involved companies and hopefully they'll respond in some fashion.
In the meantime, stay tuned for any additional developments and we hope that you'll support us by similarly avoiding Regal Movie Theaters and its affiliates in the future.
