I already had big giant gay crush on Andrew Garfield. I mean, just lookathim. He looks like a super handsome fox. The Social Network was pretty great (and he was great as the only remotely likeable character), Never Let Me Go was unenjoyable to watch but well done and The Amazing Spider-man was, well, a lot less terrible than the Tobey Maguire/Kiki Dunst Spider-man movies (also, he was in those two episodes of Doctor Who that aren't my favorite). He's a pretty great actor and seems to be really charming. Then he goes and says something wonderful like, "...I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking...So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
Mr Garfield, I have often thought that about, well, nearly every Marvel universe hero. I think 16 year old me thought about it a little too often...but, right? I can picture the troll-ish reactions to this: "I'm not homophobic, but..." or "GAY AGENDA!" or "THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!" I remember all the crazy disgusting hate Donald Glover got for saying he wanted to be Spider-man. I can only imagine what it'd be like if this became something that was even remotely close to happening. A gay and or maybe bi Spider-man. People would lose their minds. Tables would be flipped. Marvel movies would be protested. The Westboro Baptist Church would have a field day.
Also, Andrew Garfield went on to say, "I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!" I love that Garfield, who is straight and dating the equally wonderful Emma Stone, already had someone in mind for his character to explore his sexuality with. Alas, Mr Jordan seemed less excited at the thought of being gay on screen--saying (and I apologize for using Perez Hilton as a source), "No thoughts on that, but I am a fan of Andrew. He’s a talented actor, I admire his work, and I’d definitely love to work with him in the future. He’s a funny guy–he’s got a sense of humor and I love people that won’t take themselves too seriously all the time, so it’s cool for him to come out and say how he felt or joke around or whatever. It was fun, I laughed at it."Whatever. They can just cast me to play the male MJ. 30 isn't too old to play a high schooler...right?
