In the recently released trailer for The Boxtrolls, a new movie from Laika Studios, we see an adorable child sitting on a street with a variety of different kinds of families. "Sometimes there's a mother," the narrator says. "Sometimes there's a father. Sometimes there's a father and a father. Sometimes both fathers are mothers." It's almost upsetting what a big deal this is. But, well, it is--it's a really big deal. It's also really really freaking adorable.
Laika Studios is the same studio that brought us ParaNorman--my 6th favorite movie from 2012. ParaNorman featured a gay jock character who casually mentions being gay towards the very end. It was a nice surprise. The 39 year old, straight CEO of Laika Studios, Travis Knight, told The Hollywood Reporter, "We’re not in any way trying to be activists. We’re just trying to be who we are." This trailer is a nice reminder that sometimes things aren't so bad. This trailer is adorable and makes me smile. I smile, you smile, everyone but the 57, 971 of the 'One Millions Moms' smile.
