- Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio behind the Despicable Me franchise and those lovable-but-annoying Minions, is nearing a deal to bring Nintendo's beloved Super Mario Bros. franchise to theaters. It'd be hard for it to be a worse movie than the bizarre live-action attempt from 1993, but it's also likely to be a lot less...quirky.
- The new teaser for next summer's Deadpool sequel offers up a bizarre homage to PBS painting instructor-turned-meme Bob Ross featuring masturbation jokes, lots of pop culture references (from Back to the Future to Jem), and some (very brief) actual footage from the new film.
- In more sobering news: DC fired longtime editor and reported serial sexual harasser Eddie Berganza following a Buzzfeed exposé. I can't exactly shed tears for Berganza, but over at The AV Club, writer Caitlin Rosberg reminds us that one man is just the tip of the iceberg:
We’re still so wrapped up in Berganza that we haven’t started talking about the root cause of the problem, the misogyny and racism and ableism and homophobia that have run rampant through the comics industry for years. People show up for catchy hashtags and write at length about the wrongs done to characters from underrepresented groups, but it’s a lot harder to get that same turnout for real-life problems. Berganza is ultimately responsible for his own behavior, but there are employees at DC who sheltered him and protected him until the press forced their hand. The number of abusers and harassers in this industry, as in any other, is far smaller than the number of people who condone their behavior with silence.
