Welcome back to Geek Girl Crush Corner, where Manders and Tricialicious swoon over hot geeky ladies and fill you in on why they're awesome! Today, we have a special spooky edition, talking about one of our favorite characters: Morticia Addams.
She was created by Charles Addams as a character in the comic in the New Yorker in 1938. Since then she has sauntered through a television show that ran from 1964 to 1966, morbidly maneuvered through three movies in the 90s, and now she and her macabre family have a confirmed animated film that will come out in the foreseeable future. We tried to get in touch with Granny Addams to confirm a date through her crystal ball, but she was busy making her family’s favorite stew with screaming creatures in it. Either way, Morticia, and her family, are timeless. Here are five reasons why we're crushing on this super(natural) lady!
1: She Didn't Give Two Shits What Other People Thought
Manders: Morticia Addams probably has one of my favorite quotes ever. “Normal is an illusion. What’s normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.” Morticia is pretty and knows what she’s talking about. My kind of woman! She’s the embodiment of a confident and unique woman. She owns it.
Tricialicious: Oh yes, I love a woman who is confident in her own style as well as intelligent. Morticia isn't a very loquacious woman, but when she speaks? People listen. Her beauty is both aesthetic and intellectual.
2: Her Spooky Visual Aesthetic is on Point
Tricialicious: Angelica Houston is definitely my favorite Morticia. She had the perfect smile, voice, and gothic vibe. She totally captivated me as Morticia in a way no other actress has. She even has the perfect eyebrow game! For a woman who doesn't speak much, she uses her body language to confidently get her point across with classy arm crosses, and clever or sensual eyebrow raises.
Manders: Angelica Houston embodies sex appeal. Look, when I saw the Addams Family movie I really enjoyed it. I just didn’t understand why. She was just so pretty and smart and did I mention pretty?
3: She’s Cast a Spell on Us
Manders: What can I say, witches are hot. There’s something mysterious and enticing about a woman who can dabble in magic and the dark arts. And Morticia loves dabbling in witchcraft. Plus, she’s able to have her own interests outside of her kids and her husband.
Tricialicious: Oh, I have totally had a crush on Morticia since I first saw the Addams family with Angelica Houston. Something about her character just utterly captivates me. She's spooky, eccentric, intelligent, unique, and truly cares about her family. Her and her beau Gomez also have a great sex life! They are so sex positive and it is obvious they are kinky. In a consensual way. I'm truly over people kink shaming because they don't know what it's all about, and people always try to shame that which they don't understand. Sound familiar? Psh.
4: She Values Family, But Has Her Own Interests and Goals
Manders: It’s obvious that she loves her husband and her kids, but she has her own witchy hobbies and goals. She’s a well balanced woman, especially for a character that has spanned through the decades.
“I'm just like any modern woman trying to have it all. Loving husband, a family. It's just... I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade.”
Tricialicious: Yes, she adores her family, but knows what she wants and how to balance it all out. And her hubby Gomez is so supportive. In the quote above, he enthusiastically supports her wishes with his usual exaggerated gusto. Then they get a nanny so she can balance time with her family with her ghoulish interests.
5: The Queen of Spooky Feminism
Manders: She’s probably one of the best female spooky role models. She values education, but she knows that her daughter has her own agency.
“Wednesday's great-aunt Calpurnia. She was burned as a witch in 1706. They said she danced naked in the town square and enslaved the minister … But don’t worry. We’ve told Wednesday: college first.”
Tricialicious: It's obvious she is the one running the family. She has Gomez under her spell, but you can tell they both love each other deeply. He doesn't boss her around, in fact he cherishes her and they make an amazing team no matter what their family goes through. Honestly it makes me happily and sardonically chuckle that she and her daughter Wednesday are obviously smarter than Gomez and Pugsley. Yet they all love each other and embrace their atypical lifestyle no matter what outsiders say.
We're here, we're queer, and we love us a spooky lady. Especially one who's sexy, elegant, and supportive of her family. Including supporting her daughter testing an electric chair out on her son. Morticia Addams definitely fits the bill for our Halloween crush. See you next time at Geek Girl Crush Corner!
