San Diego Comic Con officially kicked off last night with Preview Night, and fans from around the world were introduced to the 2017 convention floor in all its glorious geekiness.
2017 marks my fifth consecutive pilgrimage to this holiest of holy sites in all of nerd culture, and I finally feel like I know a thing or two about how to get around and how to prioritize things. For example, this year, I was smarter about identifying in advance some key convention exclusives that I wanted on preview night, so my experience was much more strategic and, ultimately, more fun. In particular, I was very excited to get a signed copy of the SDCC edition of the forthcoming novel, Star Wars Battlefront II: Inferno Squad by Christie Golden, a new Bioworld rebel-inspired Battle of Hoth backpack, and a convention exclusive variant cover of the first issue of the new Robotech comic.
Buy. All. The Things.
The floor itself was the usual heady cocktail of all the fandoms: simultaneously overwhelming and affirming. The Master Builders over at the Lego booth were showing off Episode VII Luke Skywalker and Thor from Thor: Ragnarok.
Meanwhile, things at the DC booth are focused on the upcoming Justice League film, and we got a close-up of the costumes and character designs.
And speaking of iconic lewks, The Prop Store of London, Inc. had Julie Newmar's Catwoman costume on display, and, needless to say, my adoring gasp revealed me as really really gay to about two dozen bystanders.
Back at the Star Wars booth, it was thrilling to see on display the costume of everyone's favorite maybe gay Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron.
Overall, the crowd was in remarkable spirits, and we're all looking forward to an exciting weekend of panels, reveals, and celebrity antics. Stay tuned for more from sunny San Diego!
