- Wonder Woman has a long history as an LGBTQ icon, even before she was canonically queer, but the divisive (to say the least) nature of Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Suicide Squad left me less than optimistic about her first big-screen starring role. Thankfully, with overwhelmingly positive reviews, it appears Wonder Woman may actually be the superheroine film all the world is waiting for.
- Marvel's Runaways, my favorite team of supervillain offspring turned heroes to include a lesbian, solar-powered alien and a shape-shifting, gender-fluid Skrull, will not only be a Hulu series: it'll also be returning to comics this September, courtesy of acclaimed YA writer Rainbow Rowell and openly queer artist Kris Anka (last seen drawing Marvel's short-lived but wonderfully beefcake-yStar-Lord series).
- In spite of an enthusiastic fanbase (and a particularlyrapturous reception from queer audiences), Netflix has cancelledSense8, the Wachowski siblings' ultra-ambitious sci-fi drama that followed a group of diverse characters around the world—including a trans hacker in San Francisco and a closeted Mexican telenovela star—who discover that they are psychically connected. The show's international settings no doubt made it expensive to produce, but I wish Netflix would see the value of the diversity the show embodies, even if it can't get the audiences of House of Cards or Stranger Things.
