5 Great Geeky Dates for You and Your Partner

For when you want to be a little more creative than Netflix & chill.

My partner and I are a pretty geeky pair. The first present he ever bought me was Bitch Planet Volume I. Our third date was seeing Deadpool opening night. He is texting me pictures of his superhero figurine collection as I type this. As much as I love a day spent curled up in bed catching up on Supergirl, sometimes it’s nice to have a date that’s not just Netflix & chill. So without further ado, here’s five geeky dates for you and your partner!

1. Check Out a Local Event

My partner and I decided to turn Free Comic Book Day into a full date day. We got our freebies (and bought a couple extras), had a lovely lunch at the grilled cheese place below the Grand Central Midtown Comics, and went to see Civil War. Turning a big annual event like Free Comic Book Day into a date is a nice way to break out of routine dates because you get to enjoy something rare and exciting together. If you’re at a loss for which event to attend with your date mate, you can always check out GeeksOUT’s event listings or ask around at your local comic book store, library, or museum. Whenever I am feeling tired of dinner and a movie and want to do something new on date night, I find there is almost always some local geeky awesomeness going on if I look.

2. Play Through a Game Together

I am not a hardcore gamer at all. My favorite game is Harvest Moon and I spend most of it obsessing over who I should marry. But I do love old PC games like the Nancy Drew games by Her Interactive. These games are perfect to play with a partner because they are short and simple enough to be played through in a single day. While destroying each other in Mario Kart until someone cries is fun, I love playing a game that requires you to play as the same character and make choices together. It makes the play a little more cooperative and less likely to end in a screaming match. So whatever your game of choice is, order a pizza, fire up your console of choice, and see how fast you and your partner can become the victor!

3. Hit Up Your Local Comic Store & Shop for Each Other

This is a fun twist on simply visiting a bookstore together. Go to your comic book shop together, browse, and select something for your partner you think you’ll love while they do the same for you. It’s a fun way to see what your partner thinks you’ll enjoy and to share the stories you love.

If you’re like me and my sig other and one of you is a total comic buff while the other is a comic novice, you can always mix this up and have one partner share comics and the other share something else they love like a tv series, a game, or a novel. If you’re low in cash, you can also lend your partner something you already own (like that massive pile of Hellboy comics my partner gave me). UItimately it’s a fun way to learn more about your partner and the narratives and characters they love.

4. Bake Some Sweet, Geeky Treats

There are so many delicious recipes online for treats that pay homage to your favorite series. Cooking/baking together is one of my favorite dates because it’s an activity that requires teamwork, gets a little messy and silly, and ends with eating. What more can you want? There are so many recipes for geeky desserts online that you can definitely find one that fits your tastes for fandom and food. Personally, I am all about these Cookie Cat ice cream sandwiches and I can’t wait to make them with my partner.

5. Put Together a Closet Cosplay and Have a Photoshoot

As a super sentimental cosplayer, one of my favorite things about being in a relationship is the potential for couple cosplays. Now we all know putting together an amazing cosplay can take a lot of hours of blood, sweat, and tears, but closet cosplays can be a lot of fun with a lot less work. You can do this one of two ways: either go into your home and see what you have lying in the house or hit a thrift store and give yourself a challenging budget like $10. Then see which of your favorite fictional couples you can become. Finally, create some adorable souvenirs from your date by taking a whole bunch of pictures. Because let’s be real are you really a geeky couple if you’re not making it #instaofficial with some super nerdy selfies?

I hope you and your partner enjoy these geeky dates! Be sure to comment and let me know your favorite way to celebrate your geeky interests in your relationship.
