Detour is, frankly, a lowlight of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, but it does have one thing going for it: the boys. Tye Sheridan (above), soon to be known as Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse, plays the lead role as if he’s allergic to shirts, and that’s just fine if you like twinky, lean bodies. His shower scene is repeated twice, and he’s very likable in an underwritten part in a half-baked movie. His other male co-stars are equally cute, notably Stephen Moyer, aka True Blood’s Vampire Bill. Hopefully we’ll see all of them in better movies real soon.
Other Tribeca hunks are starring in superior films. This year’s selection is the strongest I’ve personally seen, and standout male performers include The Cabin in the Wood’s Fran Kranz (above) as a sexy wallflower in Rebirth; handsome Watchmen vet Patrick Wilson in A Kind of Murder; Teen Beach Movie’s Garrett Clayton and Pretty Little Liars’ Keegan Allen as porn pups in King Cobra (bottom); and Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, in various stages of undress in the dystopian High-Rise (just below).
I’ll give a bonus shout out to two de-facto scream kings: Diego Klattenhoff as Abbie Cornish’s husband in Lavender—if you like ginger daddies, this guy is right up your alley—and Sharknado’s Ian Ziering as the buff, machete wielding protagonist in the virtual reality lark Killer Deal. I don’t see these movies for the man candy—really I don’t. But it doesn’t hurt.
