Universal just dropped the news that the new Jurassic World sequel will be directed by J.A. Boyona.

The as-yet-untitled fifth film in the franchise will be directed by J.A. Boyona, instead of previous JP directors. The first two films were directed Steven Spielberg, Jurassic Park III was directed by Joe Johnston, and Jurassic World was directed by Colin Trevorrow. Spielberg and Trevorrow are both returning as executive producers for the film, with Trevorrow also writing the screenplay.

J.A. Boyona is the Spanish filmmaker known for The Orphanage (2007) and The Impossible (2012). He's also contributed to two episodes of Penny Dreadful and directed the upcoming film A Monster Calls, set to release in 2016 (trailer here). Jurassic World II (not the official name) will most likely be the biggest box office hit to date in his career. Previously, Boyona was set to direct the World War Z sequel but withdrew from the project.

The Jurassic World sequal is set to release June 22, 2018, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard expected to return. The first Jurassic World grossed $1.669 billion dollars worldwide and set box office records with its release.

The official release read: "Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are pleased to announce that J.A. Bayona will direct the JURASSIC WORLD SEQUEL. 6.22.18."
