Greg Rucka! Let me explain. I had been in the comics community for awhile and enjoyed the interaction but then Greg Rucka left DC and I became very concerned about the fate of DC's female characters. Since I was trying to hone my social media skills for my day job, I thought I would start a blog highlighting how awesome the female characters of DC were. I figured I'd do it for a couple of months. I had no idea I'd be going three years later.
Geeks OUT: Why did you name your site the way you did?
That wasn't the original title. The original title was "And then she kicked their ass ..." the URL however was a little long so I played around with a few and came up with DC Women Kicking Ass. I kept the "And then she kicked their ass name" but people began to call the blog by the URL (and quickly shorted that to DCWKA and I figured why fight it?
Geeks OUT: As a kid, who was your favorite character? Has that changed?
My favorite character was Batman which led to my favorite female character - Barbara Gordon. And no it hasn't changed.
Who do you think is the most inspiring character in DC right now (only new continuity)?
In the new 52? Batwoman. Given that so much could have gone wrong with that character, she's absolutely awesome. I love the idea of her "wanting to serve" - it's really one of the most clear origins for non-meta superhero.
What female character from DC deserves a movie (besides WonderWoman)?
Amanda Waller as head of the Suicide Squad! Or Kate Spencer as an attorney who prosecutes criminals by day and stalks them by night.
Young Justice or Teen Titans?
Ah that has some many variations! In animation ... Young Justice .. in comics ... I'll take NTT over PAD's Young Justice. But I'd take the recently cancelled Young Justice comic over the new 52 Teen Titans.
Do you think that comic fans have become more or less tolerant of female fans? It seems like there have been some aggressive articles this year, but perhaps I've just started noticing them?
It's the 80/20 rule. I think the majority are welcoming to female fans. They know that if comics is going to survive the market must stay healthy and that means lots of readers. And then there are the 20% who have not quite evolved from the concept of cooties and girls introduced in the second grade. Sadly this 20% are often vocal and aggressive about the WOMENZ being in their "thing". And within that 20% there small percentage who are borderline scary in their comments and treatment of female fans.
Your post on WonderWoman and Superman getting together was awesome! If you could match Wonder Woman with someone, who would it be?
Steve Trevor worked for four decades. I don't think Wonder Woman should be with a Super. I like her being the Alpha.
What do you think an individual can do to show support for female comic book creators (besides buying their work)?
Spread the word. Hand sell a comic. I've spent time in one of my LCS pulling comics off a shelf and telling people "try this".
