Zack Snyder caught our attention when he directed the remake of Dawn of the Dead starring the ever delightful Sarah Polley, and a pre-Modern Family Ty Burrell. It was one of the first times we saw "fast zombies" and helped reignite our love for the genre.
Then he gave us 300 based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller. It was bloody and gory, and gave us Gerard Butler and a slew of hunky barely clothed men.
And it went downhill from there.
Based on how he did with 300, Zack Snyder was given the keys to the kingdom and was bestowed the honor of bringing Alan Moore's Watchmen to life on the big screen. Admittedly this was going to be tricky. Terry Gilliam was given the opportunity in the 80's but eventually left the project calling the novel "unfilmable". Admittedly, I was excited about Zack working on Watchmen. I had heard those with doubts and decided I was going to be an optimist and give him the benefit of the doubt. Plus the trailer featuring Smashing Pumpkins led me to believe this was going to be a good movie.
There were some positives that came from the movie.
We got Malin Ackerman
Another attempt to normalize male nudity with Billy Crudup's blue penis.
and...uhm.....yeah I got nothing.
Yesterday we got the news that HBO is in talks to develop a series based on Watchmen with Zack Snyder. The cynic in me thinks this is just DC trying to find their critically acclaimed "Netflix" show just like Marvel. And I'm not saying this as someone who worships everything that is Marvel. There are several DC properties that I've loved and still read/watch. But I want Zack Snyder to take two steps back and keep his hands where I can see them.
