Anyone remember Brendan Fraser as the devilishly handsome and always windswept hero from right before t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶g̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶e̶n̶d̶ Y2K? Here's a reminder:
If The Mummy popped into your head, that's exactly where Fraser and his untameable mane were cavorting in 1999 while everyone stockpiled bottled water and prayed we'd make it to see the 2000s. Feel free to give yourself a minute to let your heart stop pitter-pattering.
The Mummy released in 1999, quickly followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and then the (mediocre) Scorpion King in 2002. Unfortunately we can't really nix that last one since Universal Studios insisted on putting it in the franchise. It was still better than The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though, which I couldn't even sit all the way through. (For reference: Rotten Tomatoes gave The Mummy 55%, The Mummy Returns 47%, The Scorpion King 41% and Tomb a whopping 13%.)
The news that there will be a Mummy reboot has been out for some time, but Comic Book Movie is reporting that the basic plot has leaked, and [spoiler alert] here it is:
The story follows Navy Seal Tyler Colt and his mission in the Iraqi desert to find a group of terrorists hiding out in a bunker. To him and his teams surprise the terrorists within the bunker turn out be nothing more then some grave robbers who have all magically died. Upon entering the bunker Tyler and his team also succumb to some mystical forces out of their control. They soon realize the bunker they have infiltrated is actually a centuries old tomb. Mayhem erupts as all the Navy seal members start turning on one another and are captivated by the forces within the tomb. Tyler is the only one to make it all the way deep within the tomb alive to find an Black Iron Sarcophagus. It's marked with Egyptian symbols like the Ankh and Eye of Horus. Here Tyler is entranced by the forces to open up and release what is inside. But after placing his hand onto the sarcophagus he is immediately stabbed in the palm with a star shaped symbol. From then on his mind is cursed with visions of Ashurbanipal, King of Assyria.....The Mummy.
Since it seems things are actually moving along on the film reboot front, might we actually see a reboot of the comics as well?
Diehard Mummy fans will remember there were a couple iterations of Mummy comics:
Instead of this being a multi-issue story arc, this was just one part of a Monster set from Universal Pictures and Dark Horse Comics. Universal wanted adaptations of their monster films, and over a number of years pieces on The Mummy, Frankenstein, The Creature From the Black Lagoon and Dracula surfaced. You can get The Mummy here.
Next, here was The Mummy: The Rise and Fall of Xango's Ax. This was a 4-issue comic released just before the Tomb film. It lasted from May - July 2008 and was published by IGN comics.
