The Avatar Is Back

The trailer for Legend of Korra book three is here!

The new trailer for season 3 of Avatar: The Legend of Korra is out, and you know what that means: it's time for another widely speculative and mostly nonsensical recap!  To watch the trailer, click here.

Last season, Korra opened the portal to the Spirit World during the Harmonic Convergence, at the behest of her super-supicious uncle Unalaq.  As it turned out, Unalaq was planning to merge with the spirit of evil/darkness (Vaatu) to form a 'dark' avatar.  After working with the spirit of light/good (Raava,) Korra defeated her uncle and re-imprisoned Vaatu.  However, instead of setting everything back to completely normal, Korra decided to leave the portal to the Spirit World open, so that humans and spirits could freely interact like they did in a time before the avatar.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, judging from the season 3 trailer, a few things.

The completely wordless trailer opens with a short of a title card on top of a rotating lotus flower, letting us know that Book Three is titled "Change." From there, we get an opening shot that is a direct callback to season one:

But instead of looking over a land of ice and snow, Korra sits and observes the city of Ba Sing Se.  That's right, kids, we're going on another thrilling Ba Sing Se vacation!  Pack your bags and remember to leave your dissent at home!  The Dai Li will be there:

The Dai Li apparently took a few child grabbing classes during the time skip

As well as this fierce Earth Queen.

Pet bear not yet confirmed

We also see quite a bit of metalbending going on, particularly from the Republic City Police Department, who will hopefully be able to actually do something this season.  Maybe fight the Dai Li?  We haven't had a really good earth bending rumble in ages, guys.  Look at Lin Bei Fong's face and tell her you don't want to have an earth bending rumble.

It can't be done

Check out that crazy silver castle thing that Lin's staring at.  Judging from the large number of possible criminals we see during the trailer, it's probably a prison.  Possible criminals such as this girl with the combustion third eye tattoo:

Sparky Sparky Boom Girl CONFIRMED

This guy who bends freaking magma:

No word on if he will be paying for those sidewalk damages

This water bender who uses those water whips as arms:

I'm having major Hama flashbacks

This airbender:

With hair as luscious and flowing as a cool stream

And this character who's face we don't see:

But do we really need to?

The trailer seems to be leading us to believe that now that Korra has opened the portal to the Spirit World, bending has become possible for previous non-benders.  We see a rather large group of airbenders from all walks of the Avatar world in one shot, as well as Aang's son, Bumi, possibly airbending in one scene.  It also seems that it is now possible for other benders besides the avatar to bend more than one element, as shown by the magma bending, which would probably have to combine fire and earth bending.  There's plenty of action shots of Korra and Co fighting, running, and running while fighting; plus, my personal favorite Asami Sato looks like she's going to be super bad ass this season, just like she has been for the other two seasons.

This screencap means Korrasami is canon

Also making a rather surprising appearance is retired Fire Lord Zuko, though whether or not he's going to be happy about the Spirit portal being open is unclear.

In other news: that is a really sharp beard

Book 3: Change does not yet have a release date.
