When you think of possibilities the Next Big Movie Franchise, what's your first thought? Another YA book, adapted for the big screen? The upcoming Fantastic Four film? The mess that is Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Wrong. You're so wrong. The answer is Barbie.
Bleeding Cool and The Mary Sue report that Mattel has signed a deal with Sony Pictures for an upcoming live action Barbie film. Additionally, Deadline reports that the film will be produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, The Big C,) will be penning the script.
Mattel seeks to turn Barbie into a series of live action films. The series "allows the character Barbie to use her personal and professional skills to step into the lives of others and improve them, almost like a modern-day Mary Poppins." This set up can span over several movies, and allow for new characters to be introduced.
The film sounds like a mix of Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse and Pemberly Digital's Emma Approved, which means that someone has been listening to my oddly specific prayers. Though Mattel seeks to cast a new young actress as Barbie, I want to point out that Emma star Joanna Sotomura has the perfect mix of pretty and perky that any Barbie should aspire to have.
So far, Barbie has no casting news and no filming news.
